Named for "kikalamazoo" -- a Potawatomi Indian word for boiling water -- referring to rough rapids where rivers cross, Kalamazoo also is the birthplace of products from Shakespeare fishing gear to Gibson guitars. The Gilmore Car Museum showcases Checker, Roamer and Barley vehicles once produced to make Kalamazoo the "other" Motor City. Regionally, Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station showcases the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, W.K. Kellogg Experimental Forest, and Kellogg Dairy Center. Hickory Corner's W.K. Kellogg Manor House is open year around for touring and holiday events.
