Named for "kikalamazoo" -- a Potawatomi Indian word for boiling water -- referring to rough rapids where rivers cross, Kalamazoo also is the birthplace of products from Shakespeare fishing gear to Gibson guitars. The Gilmore Car Museum showcases Checker, Roamer and Barley vehicles once produced to make Kalamazoo the "other" Motor City. Kalamazoo College, Western Michigan University and other area schools support performing arts ensembles of all genres, along with attractions from Binder Park Zoo to Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery. Regionally, Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station showcases the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, W.K. Kellogg Experimental Forest, and Kellogg Dairy Center. Hickory Corner's W.K. Kellogg Manor House is open year around for touring and holiday events. Turkey may be king at the Cornwell family's Turkeyville USA, but the winged wonders not known for brilliance still get dressed, cooked and served with all the fixins on this 400-acre farm with dinner theatre, store, and more. As a scenic year-round community with its renovated Art Deco downtown, historical neighborhoods, outstanding museums and theaters, Kalamazoo also has three ski resorts, four wineries, 22 golf courses, and 83 lakes with public access. Lodging options include more than 2,600 rooms in properties from family-run bed and breakfasts and inns, to ski lodges and resorts, to downtown properties including a convention hotel.
